In a bid to reclaim his political standing, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has reportedly spent close to $68,000 on a polling firm to assess his popularity, sparking speculation about a potential run for the New York City mayor's office.
According to The Post Millennial, Cuomo's political career took a nosedive in August 2021 when he was forced to resign as governor following allegations of sexual misconduct. These allegations, brought forward by New York Attorney General Letitia James, accused Cuomo of inappropriate behavior towards several women. However, the charges were dropped following his resignation, and his Lieutenant Governor, Kathy Hochul, took over the reins in Albany.
Despite the controversy, Cuomo has vehemently denied the allegations and has been actively striving to rehabilitate his public image. His efforts have included launching a podcast, establishing a pro-Israel group that has aired advertisements critical of pro-Hamas protesters, and making appearances at civic organizations and churches. Cuomo's focus appears to be on garnering support from Black and Jewish communities in New York City.
Reverend Ruben Diaz, a former councilman and state senator, has speculated about Cuomo's political ambitions. "I think he's running for mayor. I just have that feeling," Diaz said after Cuomo addressed his group of Bronx Hispanic ministers. A source close to Cuomo confirmed to the New York Post that the former governor is seriously contemplating a mayoral run, even if it means challenging incumbent Mayor Eric Adams.
Adams has been grappling with low approval ratings as the city continues to struggle with a surge in violent crime and an influx of illegal immigrants. "He's looking at it very seriously," the source revealed. "He wants back in public life. He thinks the city is in trouble and he thinks he can fix it."
Cuomo, however, remained coy about his political future during an appearance on "Real Time with Bill Maher" last month. When Maher asked about a potential mayoral run or another bid for governor, Cuomo responded with a laugh, "There will be no direct answer, I just want you to know." This statement leaves room for speculation, and only time will tell if Cuomo will indeed throw his hat in the ring for the mayoral race.
