In a recent development, The Philadelphia Inquirer editorial board has urged former President Donald Trump to withdraw from the presidential race, citing his latest debate performance as a "bombastic litany of lies."
This comes amidst a wave of media speculation and internal party calls for President Joe Biden to step down from the race due to his perceived cognitive decline during the debate.
As reported by The Post Millennial, the debate saw Biden appear disoriented and confused, losing his train of thought on several occasions. This sparked concern among many Democrats who fear that Biden's continued candidacy could pave the way for a Trump victory. Despite these concerns, the Inquirer editorial board has maintained that it is Trump, not Biden, who should bow out of the race.
In a piece published on Saturday, the editorial board asserted, "The debate about the debate is misplaced. The only person who should withdraw from the race is Trump." They further questioned the decision to include Trump in the debate, challenging the rationale behind giving him a platform.
The board acknowledged Biden's poor performance, stating, "Yes, Biden had a horrible night. Hes 81 and not as sharp as he used to be. But Biden on his worst day remains lightyears better than Trump on his best." They lauded Biden's substantive record and accomplishments on issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, infrastructure, and support for working families.
In contrast, they lambasted Trump for his alleged dishonesty during the debate, accusing him of telling 30 lies during the debate to go with the more than 30,000 mistruths told during his four years as President. The board also charged Trump with evading questions and blaming others, particularly Biden, for the nations problems.
The Inquirer editorial board painted a grim picture of a potential Trump presidency, stating, "The debate served as a reminder of what another four years of Trump would look like. More lies, grievance, narcissism, and hate. Supporters say they like Trump because he says whatever he thinks. But he mainly spews raw sewage."
However, the editorial largely sidestepped the debunked and false conspiracies that Biden propagated about Trumps presidency during the debate. Biden referenced the discredited Charlottesville hoax, falsely claiming that Trump referred to Nazis as fine people. He also repeated debunked claims that Trump called soldiers suckers and losers and inaccurately stated that Trump incited violence by predicting a "bloodbath" if he were not elected in the fall.
Biden's assertion that no U.S. soldiers died during his tenure overlooked the 13 who perished during the ill-executed withdrawal from Afghanistan and the three American soldiers killed in Jordan in January. This selective reporting underscores the need for balanced and accurate journalism in the face of political bias.
