A Kentucky resident has been found guilty of multiple terrorism-related charges, following his association with the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), a recognized foreign terrorist organization.
Mirsad Hariz Adem Ramic, a 34-year-old dual US-Bosnian citizen from Bowling Green, was convicted on Tuesday by a federal jury.
As reported by The Post Millennial, Ramic was implicated in a scheme to provide material support to ISIS, in addition to receiving military-style training from the extremist group, as per the Department of Justice's findings. Court records reveal that Ramic, along with two accomplices, left the United States on June 3, 2014. They separately arrived in Istanbul, Turkey, where they abandoned their original travel plans and purchased a flight to Gaziantep, a city near the Turkey-Syrian border. From there, the trio crossed into Syria and pledged their allegiance to ISIS.
Upon joining the terrorist organization, Ramic underwent training at an ISIS camp, as evidenced by the trial proceedings. A social media image of Ramic clad in camouflage attire, standing before a truck equipped with an anti-aircraft gun and the ISIS flag, further substantiated these claims.
The Department of Justice revealed that Ramic and his co-conspirators maintained contact after joining ISIS, discussing topics such as jihad, martyrdom, and their commitment to fighting for ISIS. They also conversed about Ramic's use of an anti-aircraft weapon to target aircraft.
Court documents further disclosed that Ramic was part of an ISIS combat unit, primarily composed of Bosnian foreign fighters. He took part in an ISIS offensive in Kobane, Syria. Ramic was deported from Turkey to the United States in 2021 and has been in federal custody ever since.
Ramic now faces a potential 50-year prison sentence, a $750,000 fine, and a lifetime of supervised release. His sentencing is slated for September 5.
