In a recent development, a grand jury has been assembled to scrutinize the evidence collected by the FBI in their ongoing investigation into the campaign fundraising of New York City Mayor Eric Adams during his 2021 run for office.
The Mayor, caught off guard by the news, expressed his ignorance of the proceedings. "I have no idea," Adams told reporters, as reported by The Post Millennial.
Adams, who was en route to Washington, DC to address President Joe Biden on the border crisis, had to abruptly return to New York upon learning that his primary campaign fundraiser was under FBI investigation over allegations of illicit foreign contributions from Turkey. A subpoena has been issued to at least one individual linked to the Mayor, further intensifying the situation.
"I dont know, Im not a lawyer. Im Eric Adams the mayor! Ex-cop! Adams exclaimed when questioned by reporters. He further added, They dont tell me stuff. Let it follow the process Speak to the counsel. The counsel will explain to you the normal process.
While Mayor Adams has not been officially charged with any misconduct, his campaign has been under the federal microscope since allegations surfaced that the Turkish government had unlawfully channeled funds into his campaign. The investigation is also probing whether Adams influenced the FDNY to hasten permits for a new Turkish consulate that had previously failed safety inspections.
According to The Post Millennial, the grand jury is likely examining the evidence with the intent of issuing additional subpoenas in the case. When questioned about the grand jury's involvement, a spokesperson for Adams neither confirmed nor denied its role in the investigation.
"City Hall has said since the beginning that it will cooperate fully with this review and it has by making individuals available to discuss any details necessary in order to reach a just and timely conclusion," the spokesperson stated.
The investigation has resulted in federal raids on the residences of several associates of Adams, including Cenk Ocal, a former Turkish Airlines executive who worked on the mayors transition team, and Brianna Suggs, Adams chief campaign fundraiser. The search warrant indicated that authorities were seeking evidence related to the theft of federal funds, wire fraud, conspiracy to steal federal funds, and wire fraud conspiracy.
