President Biden has emerged victorious in the Democratic presidential caucuses in Guam, as reported by the Associated Press.
This victory, based on the party results from the U.S. territory in the western Pacific Ocean, marks another milestone in the 2024 presidential nominating season.
According to Fox News, the Democratic caucuses in Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands on Saturday concluded a rigorous five-month period of over 100 primaries and caucuses. Tony Babauta, the chair of the Democratic Party of Guam, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming DNC Convention. "The Party is excited to be sending a delegation to the DNC Convention in full support of President Biden and Vice President Harris," Babauta stated. He emphasized the need for leadership that "continues to invest in people, improves our infrastructure, focuses on sustainability and our environment, and protects women's rights."
The Democratic and Republican nominations were secured nearly three months ago by Biden and former President Trump, respectively, following their decisive victories in the Super Tuesday contests. However, the absence of any significant drama in the presidential nominating contests does not imply a smooth path ahead for either candidate.
Despite the suspension of her campaign in early March, former U.N. ambassador and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, Trump's final competitor for the nomination, continued to secure up to 20% of the vote in some Republican presidential primaries. This suggests a potential challenge for Trump in consolidating his base voters.
On the Democratic side, President Biden has faced a protest vote through the "uncommitted" option on the ballot. This protest is a demonstration against his support for Israel in its conflict with Hamas in Gaza, indicating potential issues for Biden in securing his base voters as well. As the general election approaches, both candidates will need to address these potential problems to ensure a strong voter base.
