A high-speed chase unfolded within the confines of Laughlin Air Force Base in Texas' Val Verde County on May 31, as law enforcement pursued a suspected human trafficker.
The suspect, in a desperate bid to escape, crashed through a fence at the base, leading officers on a frantic chase that ended when the vehicle collided with another fence.
According to The Post Millennial, the chase, which lasted approximately eight minutes, prompted a lockdown of the entire base as a safety measure. Two illegal immigrants from Guatemala, who were discovered in the back of the vehicle, were promptly apprehended. The suspect, however, managed to evade immediate capture but was later apprehended, as reported by Fox News.
The footage of the chase reveals a series of near misses, with the suspect narrowly escaping capture multiple times before ultimately pushing the vehicle beyond its off-road capabilities.
In response to the incident, Laughlin Chief of Public Affairs Capt. Christine Del Aguila stated to Fox, "enhancing and evaluating base security measures is a top priority for our 47th Security Forces Squadron." She further explained that this is the standard procedure following any breach scenario. "With each instance," she continued, "our security forces personnel have been contacted by the external law enforcement agencies handling the incident in order to prepare our security personnel to coordinate and respond appropriately, maintaining the safety of our Airmen and their families, while ensuring the security of our resources on base as well."
This incident comes on the heels of a similar breach a week prior, when an illegal immigrant evaded border patrol officers by hopping a fence and entering the base. Earlier this year, two Jordanian nationals attempted to breach Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia. However, no weapons were discovered, and there was no indication that the incident was terror-related.
