In a recent interview on MSNBC's Deadline, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries issued a strong critique of the originalist judges on the Supreme Court, labeling them as "MAGA extremists" who need to be checked by legislative measures.
Jeffries expressed his concern over the Supreme Court's perceived autonomy, suggesting that the Judiciary seems to operate as if it is above the law.
Jeffries stated, "This is part of the challenge that we confront with the runaway Supreme Court that appears to want to conduct itself as if the Judiciary is above the law. For years, members of Congress in both the House and the Senate have indicated that its time for the Supreme Court to have an ethical code of conduct that is enforceable."
Jeffries pointed out that Chief Justice Roberts had implemented a code of conduct last year, but it appears to be voluntary and is largely disregarded. He emphasized the need for a legislative effort to enforce an ethical code of conduct on the Supreme Court, arguing that it is the only branch of government that currently operates without accountability.
He added, "Congress has an ethical code of conduct enforceable under law. The executive branch has an ethical code of conduct enforceable under law. Weve got to get the MAGA extremists on the Supreme Court under control."
Jeffries' comments come amidst ongoing Democratic concerns about Justice Samuel Alito, who reportedly displayed an inverted American flag at his residence in Alexandria, Virginia, allegedly in protest of the alleged widespread voter fraud during the 2020 presidential election.
In response to these allegations, Alito issued a statement to the New York Times, denying any involvement in the flag's display. He stated, "I had no involvement whatsoever in the flying of the flag. It was briefly placed by Mrs. Alito in response to a neighbors use of objectionable and personally insulting language on yard signs."
Fox News anchor Shannon Bream reported that Alito's neighbor had also used derogatory language towards his wife. Bream said, "I spoke directly with Justice Alito about the flag story in the NYT. In addition to whats in the story, he told me a neighbor on their street had an 'F Trump' sign that was within 50 feet of where children await the school bus in Jan 21. Mrs. Alito brought this up with the neighbor."
Since President Biden took office in January 2021, the Supreme Court has obstructed significant portions of his agenda, including his proposed nationwide vaccine mandate. Consequently, Democrats have openly discussed their intention to expand and pack the court if they secure the necessary votes. Last year, a group of Democratic lawmakers proposed a bill to increase the number of justices from 9 to 13, aiming to overturn the current conservative majority.
