NBC has announced an upcoming documentary, "Queer Planet," which delves into the exploration of same-sex relationships and gender transitioning within the animal kingdom.
The documentary, narrated by actor Andrew Rannells, is set to be released on June 6, marking a part of Peacock's Pride Month celebrations.
Described as a 'first-of-its-kind nature documentary' by Indie Wire, "Queer Planet" aims to uncover 'hidden LGBTQ+ communities among animals that have unconventional sexualities and genders.' The documentary will take viewers on a global journey, exploring the vast diversity of animal sexuality, from flamboyant flamingos to pansexual primates, sex-changing clownfish, multi-gendered mushrooms, and more.
The documentary's synopsis states, 'This documentary looks at extraordinary creatures, witnesses amazing behaviors, and introduces the scientists who are questioning the traditional concept of whats natural when it comes to sex and gender.' The trailer for "Queer Planet" promises to provide insights into bisexual lions, gay penguins, and transgender creatures.
Australian author Bradley Trevor Greive, featured in the film's trailer, challenges traditional beliefs, stating, 'Everything you were taught as a kid is wrong. This is a queer planet.' Biologist Antonia Forster adds, 'It's only in humans that we have such a stigma about it.' Greive further comments, 'To be honest, we should all probably get laid a little more than we do.'
Rannells, in the trailer's voiceover, asserts that, 'The idea of just having two fixed sexes is clearly out of style.' He adds, 'It's clear that no matter where you look in our planet, nature is full of queer surprises.'
The documentary also features other notable scientists, including evolutionary biologist Dr. Dan Edwards, primatologist Dr. Amy Parish, and ornithologist Dr. Martin Stervander.
The trailer, released on Thursday, has elicited a range of reactions from viewers. One YouTube user commented, 'This just got weirder and weirder and very strange for me.' Another remarked, 'Someone actually signed a document saying this show should be made.' A third viewer suggested, 'This might be the most expensive homophobic joke ever made!'
