In a speech delivered in support of the Biden administrations proposed abortion legislation, Harris declared: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men and women are created equal, endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights. She went on to list the right to liberty and the pursuit of happiness but omitted the right to life.
Fox News contributor Joe Concha weighed in on the matter, saying, The Declaration of Independence is the foundation of our government and must be respected and upheld. To omit such a fundamental right from the founding document is beyond comprehension.
In a statement issued by the White House, Harris attempted to clarify her remarks, saying, I was referencing the preamble to the Declaration of Independence, which does not explicitly mention a right to life. But I recognize that the right to life is fundamental to our nations founding principles, and I regret any confusion this may have caused.
However, many conservatives remain unconvinced that Harris was simply referencing the preamble, arguing that her omission was intentional. The Post Millennials editor-at-large, Libby Emmons, noted that Harris remarks were not an accident, but a deliberate omission. She went on to criticize the Vice Presidents selective quoting, arguing that it showed a disregard for the fundamental rights of the unborn and a disturbing lack of respect for the Declaration of Independence.
The omission of the right to life from Harris speech particularly concerns in light of the Biden administrations proposed abortion legislation, which seeks to codify and expand access to abortion. This proposed legislation has been widely criticized by conservatives, who argue that it would lead to an increase in abortions and further erode the nations founding principles.
