Renowned stunt performer and comedian Steve-O, recognized for his daring exploits in the Jackass film series, recently disclosed on his podcast, Steve-Os Wild Ride!, that he declined an invitation to appear on Bill Maher's podcast.
The refusal was due to Maher's insistence on smoking marijuana during the interview, which Steve-O found incompatible with his commitment to sobriety.
Steve-O, who is celebrating 16 years of sobriety, expressed his disappointment with Maher's refusal to abstain from smoking marijuana during his appearance. He stated, "Im a clean and sober guy. Its very important that I maintain my sobriety, its approaching 16 years. I am about to be sweet 16." He further emphasized the importance of his sobriety, saying, "really theres nothing that I value more than my sobriety. Theres nothing more that I protect than my recovery."
The Jackass star contrasted Maher's stance with his experiences on other podcasts, where hosts, despite being habitual marijuana users, chose not to smoke out of respect for Steve-O's sobriety. He cited Mike Tyson's podcast, 'Hotboxin,' as an example, stating, "All of these prolific potheads, Ive been on their shows and it wasnt so important to them to blow marijuana smoke in my face, but for Bill Maher it was a dealbreaker.
Steve-O has been open about his journey to recovery from drug addiction. In 2023, he revealed his aversion to the smell of marijuana, stating, "When I smell marijuana I find it kind of upsetting. I don't like breathing it into my lungs and what's worse, I love the way it smells," as reported by the Daily Mail.
During an appearance on Australian radio, Steve-O admitted to having experimented with a wide range of substances, with the exception of hard drugs. He said, "I never tried heroin and if I tried crack cocaine I'm pretty sure I did it wrong. Other than that, I did everything."
He concluded with a hopeful note on addiction recovery, stating, "Any other disease, the best you can hope for is to get back to where you were before the disease. But for addicts, when we treat ourselves we become a better version than before."
