According to the New York Post, six first responders were sent to the hospital after being exposed to a mystery drug that killed two people in a Syracuse apartment.

According to Mayor Ben Walsh, officials responded to a 9-1-1 call about two dead people in an apartment at the Brighton Towers complex.

According to the New York Post, firefighters and other first responders came upon the two deceased individuals suspected of having died from cutting their drugs with another powdery substance found nearby.

A third individual was discovered in the same apartment, but that person was struggling with their health, and that individual was taken to the hospital to be treated.

American Medical Response left the scene shortly after investigating it; however, they were called back when first responders began to get sick from whatever the drug caused so many problems for them.

Three Syracuse Police Officers, one Syracuse Firefighter, and one AMR staffer were sent to the hospital to be treated for illnesses related to the situation that they found themselves in after being exposed to the mystery drugs.

The New York Post reports that the citys hazmat team had to evacuate 18 apartment building floors to ensure everyone remained as safe as possible given the circumstances.

Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon said that it wasnt a certainty as to what the drug was. Still, the suspected drug is xylazine, which is a horse tranquilizer that has been ravaging the city.

McMahon reported: We also know that over the weekend, we saw a spike and xylazine overdoses.

He also said: We had over 40 confirmed cases focused centrally in the downtown area in the southwest section of the city. Its unknown whether any of these issues are related.

Xylazine overdose symptoms are very similar to the symptoms that people experience with fentanyl overdoses. However, this drug does not react to NARCAN treatment. That is important to note because it means that those who overdose on this drug might not be able to be brought back into their lives as they might have with some other types of drugs. Regardless, this type of drug overdose is hazardous and scary. Anyone exposed to this kind of thing should seek medical assistance immediately. We must all hope the city finds its way out of this crisis.
