According to the Hill, the House Foreign Affairs Committee is ready to hold its first hearings into the withdrawal from Afghanistan that the Biden Administration ordered in 2021.
The committee has invited two leaders from groups that organized some of the flights out of Afghanistan set up for those looking to leave the country as it started to fall apart entirely.
The March 8th hearing is set to bring in leaders from Allied Airlift 21 and Task Force Pineapple to testify about what they did, how they contributed to the situation related to getting the planes out of Afghanistan, and how some of those critical decisions were made.
The Hill reports that this will be the first hearing by the GOP-led committee into the Afghanistan situation since the Republicans took over Congress after the 2022 elections. Thus, the questions asked of those called upon to testify are expected to be tough but fair.
Former President Trump was the one who first brokered the deal to leave the country. However, many fingers have been pointed at the Biden White House for not having a better plan for how to pull out of the country.
The GOP-produced report did not have any significant new news to break to the country, but it did recap many of the events that Americans saw throughout the country. Thus, this didnt help create new information that wasnt already primarily known. That said, the Republicans in the House still want to make sure they get to have their hearings and that their voices are heard.
According to the report put out by the Republicans:
The Biden administrations, and specifically the State Departments, refusal to provide Congress with the necessary information regarding Americas unconditional withdrawal from Afghanistan has hampered the Minority Committees ability to complete a thorough investigation.
Now, there will finally be some hearings relevant to how the withdrawal from Afghanistan unfolded just a couple of years ago. There are grumblings about the Biden White House and how it has resisted the desire for Congress to look into the situation that unfolded in Afghanistan. Other agencies have stirred up some complaints about the resistance from the Biden Administration to allow for oversight of this event. Some interesting pieces of information may have yet to emerge to the public.
