Two Honduran nationals were accused of shooting and killing a Bald Eagle with the intent of eating it.
The Gateway Pundit reports that the Stanton County Sheriffs was called out to the Wood Duck Recreation Area at approximately 4 pm on Tuesday over reports of a suspicious vehicle on the grounds.
When law enforcement agents arrived, they found Ramiro Hernandez-Tziquin and Domingo Zetino-Hernandez, and a dead bald eagle. An interpreter also had to arrive on the scene since neither of the two men spoke English.
The Sheriffs Office released a statement in which they said: The vehicle was located in a field, and while having contact with the two males it was determined that they had a dead American Bald Eagle in their possession,. Their statement continued: Further investigation revealed that the two had shot and killed the protected national bird in that area and stated they planned on cooking and eating the bird.
The sheriffs office said, Nebraska Game and Parks was contacted and took custody of the eagle, and the rifle used to kill the eagle.
The two men were charged with unlawful possession of the Eagle. The Bald Eagle is a protected species in the United States, given that it is a national symbol of the country.
The Gateway Pundit reports that Hernandez-Tziquin was also cited for not having a drivers license. As the investigation continued, the Sheriffs Office noted that more severe charges were also possible in this case.
Local station WGNO reports the following: According to the National Audubon Society, the number of bald eagles had been in serious decline due largely to shootings during most of the 20th century. However, now they have been seeing a gradual increase since the 1970s.
This is the kind of thing that most people dont like to even think about the possibility that a Bald Eagle could be harmed like this. This is such a beautiful bird, and it is a protected species in our country because it is a national symbol. Besides that, the fact that these two gentlemen allegedly wanted to eat the Bald Eagle that they had killed turns the stomachs of many people. That is not an animal considered on the menu for Americans, so it isn't comforting to many that others dont see it that way.
