A Brazilian woman, Mirian Santana, 27, was apprehended on Monday for allegedly deceiving her way into a medical role at a local hospital by purchasing a fake diploma online for a mere $8, as per the New York Post.
Santana purportedly attended to approximately 30 patients on her inaugural day at the hospital, leveraging the counterfeit document that falsely indicated her completion of medical studies in 2022, the inception year of the program, thus unmasking the deceit.
The scheme unraveled when colleagues harbored suspicions and cross-checked her registration number, which turned out to be linked to a legitimate physician, the New York Post disclosed. Santana admitted to procuring the spurious diploma online when confronted with the incriminating evidence. She professed to authorities that she practiced as a speech therapist, earning a reported $802 monthly, a claim yet to be substantiated by officials.
Investigations unveiled that Santana secured her position through a third-party firm that had clinched a deal with the city's administration, the New York Post detailed. She faces charges encompassing illegal practice of a profession, ideological forgery, use of counterfeit documentation, endangerment of life, and attempted misappropriation. Santana is presently detained in Tupi Paulista pending inquiries by the Civil Police.
