Keith Lopez Herring, a 52-year-old man with a lengthy criminal record, has been arrested once again following a series of alleged violent incidents in Portland, Oregon.
The charges against Herring include attempted commission of a class B felony, second-degree robbery, three counts of second-degree assault, three counts of unlawful use of a weapon, second-degree escape, and menacing.
As reported by KATU, one of the incidents involved a woman who was using a power outlet outside the Marriot Hotel on SW14th and Naito Parkway. As Herring approached her, she wished him a "blessed day," to which he responded by allegedly striking her below the knees with a 6-foot-long 2x2 piece of lumber.
Herring's alleged crime spree continued as he attempted to assault another individual near the hotel. He then reportedly made his way to the Plaid Pantry on Southwest 1st Avenue, where he is accused of confronting a security guard and striking him in the face and forearm with the same piece of wood.
The accused then allegedly threatened a man working at a nearby dentist's office with a metal rod, in an attempt to carjack his vehicle.
The police eventually apprehended Herring and transported him to the station. However, during questioning, he allegedly attacked a detective, causing her to fall to the ground.
Herring, who is currently being held without bail, is scheduled to appear in court again on March 13.
The Yakima Herald-Republic reports that Herring has a substantial criminal history in both Oregon and Washington state. He was convicted of indecent liberties in 1988 and was released from prison in the early 2010s, despite being classified as a "Level 3 offender," indicating a high likelihood of reoffending. In 2017, Herring relocated to Sherman County, but failed to register as a sex offender, adding to his list of offenses.
