Ivan Provorov is a professional hockey player for the Philadelphia Flyers who refused to wear an LGBTQ-themed jersey during a recent game.
As Redstate reports, this set off many people in the LGBTQ+ community and had many people demonize the player for refusing to wear something he disagreed with. However, not everyone agrees on this, and at least one gay man is speaking the truth to the people angry with Provorov.
The controversy started on Wednesday when Provorov uploaded a brief video explaining that he would not wear the LGBTQ jersey and why he felt he should not do so given his religious beliefs. That was when many people jumped on his case and began to make assumptions about Provorov and his true motives for not wearing the jersey. They began to label him as a right-wing bigot.
However, not everyone jumped on this bandwagon and agreed. There were some people, such as the famous TikTok star Clarkson Lawson who is a gay man but jumped to the defense of Provorov. Not only that, but he took exception to some ways that the LGBTQ+ community went after Provorov.
He said the following:
Somebody explain to me, as a gay man or a gay woman, what you get from requiring somebody who doesnt agree with being gay to validate your sexuality.
He continued by saying:
The fact that we have this incessant need for validation shows that were not secure in who we are.
and
We dont need a pride night or a pride month. Just live your life, be happy with who you are, and stop trying so hard to garner validation from people who will not give it to you.
Finally, he concluded by saying:
If you truly want to be happy with who you are, find validation from within. Your life will be way better off because of it.
He feels strongly that the LGBTQ+ community doesnt have to continue to go after people who dont wear their colors or might not agree with every aspect of what the LGBTQ+ community is striving for. He insists that it is better to let people come around to the viewpoints that the LGBTQ+ community would like for them to come to on their own time. That is the only way that people will genuinely become accepting.
