Renowned sports commentator Bob Costas has come under fire from panelists on "The Big Weekend Show" following his controversial remarks on CNN's "Smerconish" on Saturday, where he labeled supporters of former President Donald Trump as members of a "toxic cult.
".
Radio host and Fox News contributor Guy Benson responded to Costas' comments, stating, "74, 75 million people in this country voted for Donald Trump. I'm not sure that's a great look [for Costas]." The conversation shifted from Trump's recent triumph in the South Carolina primary, the home state of Nikki Haley, to the current political climate. Benson, along with Fox News contributors Katie Pavlich and Lisa Boothe, offered their perspectives on Costas' remarks.
Pavlich expressed her disappointment in Costas' transition from sports commentary to political commentary, stating, "From sports to saying Trump supporters are a cult It was a deplorable moment for him."
Boothe suggested that Costas' criticism would extend to any Republican candidate leading the race for the White House in the upcoming November elections. She argued that the focus has largely shifted towards Trump as he has so far secured all primary and caucus victories.
Boothe stated, "Let's say Nikki Haley did get the nomination, but she's not going to. He would be turning the same ire toward her, right? Remember, they called John McCain racist. Mitt Romney was a sexist. Basically, if you're a Republican, you have a target on your back."
She further noted the criticism towards Trump and the apparent fracturing of the coalition that propelled current President Joe Biden to victory in 2020. Boothe added, "They're going to criticize Donald Trump, but we're seeing, with Joe Biden, a fracturing coalition of the people that propelled him to victory in 2020, saying, You know what? We thought that you were going to be better. You werent.' And now Trump's going in and can easily say, Things were good under my watch"
During his appearance on "Smerconish," Costas referred to Trump as the "most disgraceful figure in modern presidential history" and criticized his supporters. He stated, "He [Trump] is a bubbling cauldron of loathsome traits. You have to be in the throes of some sort of toxic delusion and in a toxic cult to believe that Donald Trump has ever been, in any sense, emotionally, psychologically, intellectually, or ethically fit to be President of the United States. But his supporters are locked in on that."
Costas also criticized President Biden for seeking re-election, suggesting that it could potentially lead to a return of Trump to the presidency and plunge the nation into "insanity."
In the South Carolina primary on Saturday, former President Trump secured a decisive victory over former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, marking another crucial win in his bid for the Republican nomination. The next significant event on the political calendar is Super Tuesday, scheduled for March 5.
