At a high-profile fundraising event in the Bay Area this week, President Joe Biden made some controversial remarks about the current state of the Republican Party.
The event, which was also attended by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, saw Biden comparing today's Republicans to "real racists" he had worked with in the past, even suggesting that they were worse.
Biden, who has been a senator since 1972, told the audience, "I've served with real racicsits. I've served with Strom Thurmond," according to the New York Post. Thurmond, a known segregationist, was, in Biden's view, better on race issues than the GOP members of 2024.
The President continued, "I've served with all these guys that have terrible records on race, but guess what? These guys [sitting Republicans] are worse. These guys do not believe in basic democratic principles."
Biden's comments quickly gained traction on social media, drawing the attention of Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson. Johnson expressed his outrage on X, writing, "The least popular President to seek re-election is now so desperate and so underwater in the polls he's playing the race card from the bottom of the deck."
Representative Chip Roy also chimed in, criticizing Biden and the Democrats for their policies. "Biden & radical progressive Democrats help cartels flood our country with terrorists & fentanyl, fund Hamas to attack Israel, put boys in girls locker rooms, punish cops over criminals, destroy affordable/reliable energy in the name of climate, & divide America by race," he stated.
Biden has consistently criticized the GOP, particularly its MAGA wing, portraying them as radical, far-right, anti-democratic politicians intent on eroding Americans' rights. At a separate event in Beverly Hills earlier in the week, he reiterated his belief that "This is not your father's Republican Party."
He added, "This is a different party, and I mean that sincerely." Despite his criticisms, Biden acknowledged that there are "a lot of really, really fine members of Congress that are Republicans that I disagree with, but we're friends and they play it straight."
