The Democratic Party's emerging leaders have begun to label President Biden as "elderly" in media dialogues, following Special Counsel Robert Hur's report that questioned the president's cognitive competence.
In his report, Hur depicted Biden as a "compassionate, well-intentioned, elderly man with a faulty memory," providing several instances of Biden's inability to recall the chronology of significant events. The Biden administration promptly refuted the report, asserting the president's mental acuity.
Newly elected Representative Tom Suozzi, who recently triumphed over a Republican in a New York special election, stated to FOX 5 that the fundamental truth about Biden is that "hes old," as reported by Politico.
Representative Katie Porter, a Democrat from California who is contesting for a Senate seat against Representative Adam Schiff and others, also addressed the issue of age restrictions for public office holders. The seat she is vying for was previously held by Senator Dianne Feinstein, who passed away in office last year at 90, after her health and mental sharpness seemed to deteriorate during her final years in office.
Porter told Politico that the topic of age limits for elected officials is "a conversation that we should be thinking about." She added, "Were having that conversation and that debate about the Supreme Court. And I think its hypocritical for us to not be thinking about having it given that we have some of the same long-term representation that we have."
A political consultant advised Politico that this could be a strategy to distance oneself from Biden. However, Politico reported that Democratic lawmakers remain "largely" supportive of Biden.
Representative Barbara Lee, a Democrat from California, argued after a recent debate that "in a democracy, limits should not be placed on voters."
Hur's report has subjected Biden to scrutiny over his mental sharpness, particularly among his party members and supporters.
Representative Dan Kildee, a Democrat from Michigan, stated that the report "opens the door for a closer examination of both candidates and their capabilities," referring to Biden and former President Trump.
Representative Mike Garcia, a Republican from California, commented on the Democrats who might not vote for Biden in the upcoming election, stating, "This mental capacity thing is an aggravator. It allows them to explain why theyre not voting for this person or maybe why theyre not voting at all."
