In a recent court filing, it was revealed that Nadine Menendez, wife of Democratic New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez, allegedly received a diamond engagement ring as part of a bribe intended to sway her husband's influence.
This development is part of an ongoing federal corruption investigation into Senator Menendez, who was first indicted in late September. The allegations suggest that the Senator accepted extravagant gifts in exchange for leveraging his position in the Senate to benefit Egypt.
The court filing, submitted by prosecutors in the Southern District of New York, suggests that the engagement ring for Nadine Menendez was part of a $150,000 bribe intended to favor the Egyptian government. The Senator is accused of acting as a foreign agent on behalf of Egypt.
According to the court documents, Wael Hanna, an associate of Nadine Menendez from Egypt, allegedly purchased the ring for her during her time as the Senator's girlfriend. Hanna is also reported to have bought her a Mercedes Benz car.
In an unrelated incident in 2018, Nadine Menendez was involved in a fatal accident while driving her previous Mercedes, but was not held responsible, as reported by The New York Times.
The indictment against the Menendezes alleges that they accepted a Mercedes-Benz, valued at over $60,000, as a bribe in 2019. This was after the car Nadine Menendez was driving was damaged in the aforementioned crash. Both Senator Menendez and his wife have pleaded not guilty to the charges of accepting bribes.
In a speech on the Senate floor in January, Senator Menendez vehemently defended his innocence. He said, "Almost everyone, including my friends in the press who have reported on it, havent read the indictment. Theyve only taken the governments sensational narrative of what the accusations are as truth. They havent sought facts of the allegations. Im innocent, and I intend to prove my innocence. Not just for me, but for the precedent this case will set for you and future members of the Senate."
