In a recent interview with MSNBC's Alex Wagner, former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton addressed the ongoing concerns about President Biden's age, asserting it as a "legitimate issue."
Clinton, who maintains regular communication with White House officials, stated, "I talked to people in the White House all the time, and you know, they know its an issue, but as I like to say, look, its a legitimate issue."
Clinton also pointed out that the issue of age is not exclusive to Biden but is equally applicable to former President Donald Trump, who is only three years younger. "Its a legitimate issue for Trump whos only three years younger, right?" she questioned, "So its an issue."
Despite the age-related concerns, Clinton expressed her support for Biden, attributing it to his "merits." She emphasized the importance of discussing the stakes of the election, stating, "Once you say that, you need to also talk about what is at stake in this election. And I'm for Joe Biden because of the merits." She further praised Biden's performance as president, asserting, "I think he has done a really good job as president."
Clinton suggested that Biden should capitalize on his wealth of experience and wisdom, even making light of his age. "I think Biden also should lean into the fact that hes experienced, and that experience is not just in the political arena," she advised, "Its like, the stuff of, you know, human experience, character, wisdom. I think he should be willing to really pull that out and I think he should kid more about it."
Meanwhile, James Carville, former President Bill Clinton's lead strategist, expressed his concern about the White House's confidence in President Biden. Carville's comments came after Biden declined a Super Bowl Sunday interview, which he interpreted as a lack of confidence. "Its the biggest television audience, not even close, and you get a chance to do a 20-25-minute interview on that day," Carville noted, "And you dont do it? Thats a kind of sign that the staff or yourself doesnt have much confidence in you."
Adding to the Democratic strategists' concerns, Paul Begala, another former Bill Clinton strategist and CNN political commentator, admitted that Special Counsel Robert Hurs indictment of President Bidens memory and Biden's response was "terrible for Democrats." Begala humorously described his anxiety, saying, "Oh yeah. Look, Im a Biden supporter, and I slept like a baby last night: I woke up every two hours crying and wet the bed."
These concerns arose following Special Counsel Robert Hurs report, which revealed that Biden had knowingly retained classified U.S. documents as a private citizen. Despite this, the report recommended no charges against the 46th president, partly due to his potential defense at trial as a "sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory."
