A mysterious gastrointestinal illness has rapidly spread among passengers aboard a cruise ship, resulting in as many as 154 individuals experiencing distressing symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently conducting an investigation into the widespread outbreak on the Queen Victoria, a vessel operated by Cunard Cruise Line, a prominent British shipping and cruise company headquartered in Southampton, England. According to ABC, the CDC is diligently working to determine the cause of the illnesses.
The Queen Victoria embarked on its journey from Fort Lauderdale, Florida on January 22nd, carrying a total of 1,824 passengers and 967 crew members. The ship is scheduled to reach its final destination of Honolulu, Hawaii on February 12th.
As of Friday, it was reported that 139 individuals had fallen ill, but this number has since risen to 154, with 129 passengers and 25 crew members affected by the illness. The CDC has confirmed that the cause of the outbreak remains unknown at this time.
Cunard Cruise Line has acknowledged that "a number of guests had reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness on board" and has implemented necessary protocols to ensure the well-being of those on board, as reported by the outlet.
The CDC's Vessel Sanitation Program is closely monitoring the situation and investigating the ship's response and protocols to effectively address the outbreak.
