A Brazilian fugitive, wanted in his home country for rape, has been arrested and is facing deportation after being released into the interior of the United States in 2021 with a pending asylum court date.
Thalles Mendes Ribeiro was apprehended on June 10, 2021, when he entered the United States near San Ysidro, California. Following processing and being charged with inadmissibility, he was transferred to the custody of Enforcement and Removal Operations (EROI) San Diego.
Mendes was subsequently released with a court date on June 13, 2021, as part of the Alternatives to Detention program and was instructed to report to ERO Newark. The court date was scheduled for February 24, 2023.
However, Mendes failed to appear in court, leading a judge to order his removal from the United States. Almost 10 months later, on December 4, 2023, Mendes was apprehended in Eatontown, New Jersey.
He is currently being held at the Moshannon Valley Processing Center in Philipsburg, awaiting final removal to Brazil.
This case, along with others, serves as a stark example of the dangers associated with illegal immigration in the country. Since the start of fiscal year 2024, 50 individuals on the terrorist watch list have been apprehended while attempting to cross the border.
In a separate incident, a Haitian illegal immigrant, who had been charged with the rape of a disabled person, was released by Boston authorities before being apprehended once again.
December saw a record number of over 300,000 illegal immigrant encounters at the border, prompting intelligence officials to warn congressional leaders about the "imminent danger" resulting from the Biden administration's open border policies.
