Minnesota Democrats Push Controversial Bill To Establish Sanctuary Status

In a move that has sparked controversy, Minnesota Democrats have proposed legislation that would transform the state into a sanctuary for undocumented immigrants.

This comes amidst an unprecedented crisis of illegal immigration at the US-Southern border, which has significantly affected cities nationwide, particularly those on the border and those governed by Democrats that have implemented sanctuary policies. The crisis has pushed these sanctuary cities to their limits, leading some mayors to declare states of emergency and call for the revocation of their sanctuary status.

Despite the ongoing border crisis, Minnesota Democrats are striving to make their state the 13th sanctuary state for undocumented immigrants in the nation. In a show of support for the proposed legislation, a rally is scheduled for Monday, February 12, as reported by the American Experiment.

The proposed legislation, HF 2860, would prevent state and local law enforcement and judicial authorities from collaborating with federal immigration agencies without a judicial warrant. The bill stipulates, "A [Minnesota] government agent shall not, at the request of any federal authority, without a judicial warrant, transfer an individual to any federal authority for purposes of immigration enforcement, detain an individual, or notify any federal authority of release information."

Furthermore, the bill asserts that no state or local employee, including teachers, can "stop, question, investigate, detain, detect, report, or arrest a person" suspected of being an undocumented immigrant. The legislation also prohibits any employee from responding "to a hold, notification, civil immigration warrant, or transfer request from federal immigration authorities, including but not limited to a detainer request made by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement."

The bill was introduced by Democrat State Rep. Sandra Feist, the Vice Chair of the Minnesota House Public Safety Committee. This legislative move follows two recent incidents involving undocumented immigrants in Minnesota that have garnered national attention.

The first involves a Somali terrorist who was apprehended in Minneapolis last month after illegally entering the United States and remaining undetected for a year. The second incident involves a former ICE detainee, Alonzo Mingo, who is accused of disguising himself as a UPS worker and allegedly murdering three people in a Coon Rapids home.
