According to a recent survey, there has been a significant increase in the number of LGBTQ individuals among Generation Z Americans.
The survey, conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), found that 28 percent of Gen Z adults between the ages of 18 and 25 identify as LGBTQ. This is a substantial increase compared to previous generations, with only 16 percent of millennials, 7 percent of Generation X, 4 percent of baby boomers, and 4 percent of the silent generation identifying as LGBTQ.
The breakdown of LGBTQ identities among Gen Z adults revealed that 72 percent identified as straight, 15 percent as bisexual, 5 percent as homosexual or lesbian, and 8 percent as another identity. This data highlights the diversity within the LGBTQ community and the fluidity of sexual orientation and gender identity among young adults.
In addition to the increase in LGBTQ identification, the survey also found that Gen Z adults were less likely to adhere to established religions and were more ethnically and racially diverse than previous generations. The study also revealed that adults from both Generation Z and millennials were more likely to identify as LGBTQ than as Republican, with 21 percent of Gen Z adults and 21 percent of millennials identifying as Republican.
The survey, which was conducted between August and September 2023, included over 6,600 participants. These findings are consistent with other major surveys, such as Gallup's, which also indicate that Generation Z is the most LGBTQ adult generation to date. In Gallup's most recent survey, published in February, it was found that 7.2 percent of adults in the United States identify as LGBTQ, with nearly 20 percent of Gen Z adults belonging to this demographic.
