Joy Reid Equates Texas Border Security Supporters With 'Old Southerners' Opposing Integration

In a recent broadcast, MSNBC host Joy Reid criticized those backing Texas' border security efforts, likening their stance to that of "old southerners" who resisted integration.

Reid insinuated that Republican legislators are intentionally avoiding the passage of federal laws concerning the border, choosing instead to use the issue as a rallying point for their supporters.

Reid stated, "There is no better example of what MAGA World wants for the rest of America than Texas," referencing the state's stringent border security measures. These include the implementation of buzz saw-equipped buoys, the prohibition of federal agents' assistance in border control, and the enactment of laws criminalizing illegal border crossing.

Reid specifically targeted Texas Republican Representative Chip Roy, who recently expressed his displeasure with the Supreme Court's ruling that the Biden administration had the authority to dismantle razor wire barriers established by Texas' National Guard in the Rio Grande. In an interview with Fox News, Roy suggested that the Supreme Court could "go to hell."

Reid commented on Roy's stance, stating, "He's a member of a body and party that could actually do something about immigration. They just refuse to do it because many Republicans now see calling for zero tolerance on the border as the only way to animate their base."

In a subsequent discussion with MSNBC contributor Paola Ramos, a former Director for Hispanic Media for Hillary Clinton, Reid continued her critique of Republicans. She even suggested that the "massive resistance" to the southern border crisis echoed the defiance of "old southerners" who vowed to resist integration at all costs. Reid labeled such sentiments as "Chip Roy language."

In response to Reid's criticism, Roy maintained his conviction that Texas has an obligation to safeguard its citizens. He told Fox News, "There is no exception to that, and if the Supreme Court wants to ignore that truth, which a slim majority did, Texas still had the duty, Texas leaders still have the duty, to defend their people."

Roy likened the situation to a home invasion, stating, "It's like if someone's breaking into your house, and the court says, 'Oh sorry, you can't defend yourself.' What do you tell the court? You tell the court to go to hell. You defend yourself and then figure it out later."

In response to Reid's comments, Roy stated that "race baiting DC and NY liberals who enable human and drug trafficking can pound sand."

Meanwhile, Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared an "invasion" due to the surge of illegal immigrants crossing the southern border. He stated, "The failure of the Biden administration to fulfill the duties imposed by Article IV section 4 has triggered Article 1, section 10, Clause 3, which reserves to this State the right of self-defense. For these reasons, I have already declared an invasion under Article I, section 10, Clause 3 to invoke Texas's constitutional authority to defend and protect itself."
