In a recent revelation, a forthcoming book alleges that Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, known for his conservative stance, displayed an unexpected camaraderie towards Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.
Willis is currently prosecuting former President Donald Trump, a case in which Graham provided testimony. This intriguing development was reported by Politico on Wednesday.
The case revolves around Willis securing an indictment against Trump and several other defendants on August 19. The indictment includes 41 charges related to an alleged criminal conspiracy to overturn Georgia's 2020 presidential election results and the submission of false documents.
Graham, who initially supported Trump's efforts, later acknowledged Joe Biden's victory and testified before the grand jury on November 22, 2022. According to Politico, Graham's testimony was a dramatic turn of events where he "threw Trump under the bus" and subsequently attempted to embrace Willis.
Graham reportedly expressed relief after his testimony, stating to Willis, "That was so catharticI feel so much better." He thanked Willis for the "opportunity to tell his story" and made an attempt to hug her. Politico quoted a witness describing Willis' reaction to Graham's gesture as "whatever, dude." These excerpts are from a chapter in a book by Michael Isikoff and Daniel Klaidmanin, titled "Find Me the Votes: A Hard-Charging Georgia Prosecutor, a Rogue President, and the Plot to Steal an American Election," set to be published on Tuesday.
The book further alleges that Graham disparaged Trump's character before the grand jury, insinuating that Trump cheated at golf and was easily deceived. "Graham testified that if you told Trump 'That Martians came and stole the election, hed probably believe you," wrote Isikoff and Klaidmanin.
Graham had initially sought to evade testifying before the grand jury by invoking his congressional immunity under the "speech or debate" clause in Article 1, Section 6 of the U.S. Constitution. However, his attempt to block the grand jurys subpoena was ultimately dismissed by the Supreme Court of the United States.
Since indicting Trump, Willis has faced accusations of misusing public funds on publicity consultants and employing a romantic partner as a special prosecutor on the case. The Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary has announced investigations into her conduct, and similar proposals have been made in the Georgia state Senate. The Fulton County Commissioner has also requested documents to review her office's spending.
Despite his testimony against Trump, Graham has endorsed Trump's campaign for the 2024 presidential election.
