Fulton County, Georgia's District Attorney, Fani Willis, is set to appear in court on February 15 to address allegations of an improper relationship with her lead prosecutor.
The hearing was scheduled by Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee. Willis has been at the forefront of prosecuting former President Trump in his indictment on charges of election interference.
According to court documents filed earlier this month, Willis is accused of hiring special prosecutor Nathan Wade, her alleged romantic partner, to handle the Trump case. It is alleged that she financially benefited from this relationship through extravagant vacations funded by the fees Wade's firm received for their work on the case.
While Willis has neither confirmed nor denied these claims, she has suggested that she and Wade are being targeted due to their race. In her first public statement on the matter, Willis addressed the congregation at the Big Bethel AME Church in Atlanta on Sunday. She expressed her frustration, stating, "They only attacked one...First thing they say, 'Oh, she's gonna play the race card now.' But no God, isn't it them that's playing the race card when they only question one?"
Michael Roman, a co-defendant in the Georgia case alongside Trump, has accused Willis and Wade of engaging in an "improper" and "clandestine" affair while appointments were being made for the 2020 election interference case.
Trump himself has called for the case against him to be dropped, citing the allegations against Willis. In a statement to reporters, he said, "You had a very big event yesterday as you saw in Georgia where the district attorney is totally compromised. The case has to be dropped...They went after 18 or 20 people...She was out of her mind. Now it turns out that case is totally compromised...It's illegal. What she did is illegal. So we'll let the state handle that, but what a sad situation it is."
