The man who was brutally murdered in Brazil last week in front of his family has been identified as a Serbian hitman, Darko Geisler, who was on Interpol's wanted list for multiple contract killings.
Luiz Ricardo Lara Dias Jr., the lead investigator on the case, revealed to the media on Friday, "Investigations showed that he lived here clandestinely and under a false Slovenian name." Dias Jr. further stated that Interpol had been seeking Geisler for nearly a decade, and the police suspect that his murder may be linked to his criminal past.
The victim was identified earlier this week by local police as Darko Geisler, aged 43, after liaising with the Slovenian consulate in So Paulo. This was based on a passport found on the victim, which later turned out to belong to a Slovenian citizen who had lost it in 2017.
A reverse search of Geisler's photos online led the police to identify him as a Serbian hitman wanted in Montenegro for multiple homicides and possession of weapons and explosives, as reported by Jam Press. Montenegrin authorities confirmed Geisler's occupation as a contract killer.
The police now believe that Geisler had been living in Brazil for nine years, concealing his identity after he fled Montenegro for Bosnia following the execution of a man at a prison gate on Christmas Day in 2014. His whereabouts remained unknown until his recent demise.
Geisler, after settling in Brazil, met his future wife in 2015 or 2016 and relocated to Santos. His wife professed ignorance about his true identity. According to local outlet Folha de S.Paulo, those close to the couple stated that the truth about Geisler's past did not align with the man they knew. Despite speaking little Portuguese, Geisler was known to take his son to school and socialize with other parents in the neighborhood.
A neighbor revealed that Geisler often played games with his son in the street and frequently visited the local bakery with his family. He claimed to work as a carpenter and said his family received money from a business he owned in his "home country" of Slovenia.
Geisler's life came to a tragic end when a masked gunman shot him at point-blank range while he was with his family. The assailant, whose identity remains unknown, fled the scene in a black car, leaving no traces. A neighbor who heard the gunshots and Geislers wife screaming alerted the Military Police and emergency services. Geisler was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
Brazilian authorities are still on the hunt for Geisler's killer. They suspect that his criminal past may have contributed to his murder. The police in Brazil and Montenegro are collaborating to unravel the mystery surrounding Geisler's death.
