In a private meeting with House Republicans on Tuesday, Georges Bergs, the art dealer representing Hunter Biden, was interrogated about the buyers of the President's son's artwork.
The investigation revealed that the purchasers included Democratic donors, a revelation that Bergs declined to comment on when confronted by reporters.
Bergs, who operates an art gallery in New York that showcases some of Hunter Biden's pieces, was approached by two journalists within the Capitol Hill complex. When questioned about the identities of the donors who purchased the artwork, Bergs simply responded, "No comment."
The probe into Hunter Biden's art transactions disclosed that Democratic donors Kevin Morris and Elizabeth Hirsh Naftali were among the buyers. Morris, a close friend of Hunter, was exposed in October as the individual who had bought Hunter Bidens share in the Chinese investment firm Bohai Harvest RST. This transaction involved Morris assuming $250,000 in debt from an unpaid loan given to Hunter Biden by Chinese business partners. The loan had listed President Joe Biden's Delaware residence as the beneficiary address.
Morris, who has also assisted Hunter with legal issues, purchased the majority of his artwork. Bergs received $875,000 from Morris for the artwork, as reported by the Daily Mail. The publication also stated that Bergs would never disclose the identities of Hunter's artwork buyers to him. However, sources familiar with Bergs' congressional interview on Tuesday told the Daily Mail that Bergs "admitted" that Hunter "knew the identities" of individuals who had bought 70% of his artwork.
Naftali, another buyer, paid $42,000 in February 2021 and an additional $52,000 in December 2022 for another piece. Between her first and second purchases, she was appointed to the Commission for the Preservation of Americas Heritage Abroad.
In August 2023, Naftali's attorney sent a letter to Oversight Committee Chairman Comer, attempting to refute what the letter termed numerous false allegations about her connection with President Biden and Hunter. The letter clarified, Any insinuation that her purchase of art was unusual or somehow improper is entirely unsupported. ... To be clear, Ms. Naftali purchased the artwork solely because she liked the art, and the prices were reasonable ... never at any time did she have direct or indirect contact with anyone at the White House regarding any art purchased.
On Wednesday, House Republicans are set to hold a markup meeting on a resolution recommending that the House of Representatives find Hunter Biden in Contempt of Congress in the Oversight Committee. The House Judiciary Committee will also be present at the markup.
