The Biden administration is increasingly relying on Mexico to help curb the unprecedented influx of illegal immigrants into the United States, as revealed in a recent NBC News report.
Government representatives from both countries have indicated that Mexico has its own set of expectations from the United States, including the granting of amnesty to a minimum of 10 million Hispanic illegal immigrants.
The Biden administration has seen a consistent surge in illegal crossings since its inception, with records being broken repeatedly. The highest number of illegal immigrant crossings at the southern border in history was recorded just last month.
Efforts by the Biden administration to reduce illegal immigration have only resulted in temporary dips in crossings. Last month, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Mexico to request assistance from Mexican President Andrs Manuel Lpez Obrador, as reported by NBC.
On Friday, Lpez Obrador urged the U.S. to approve a proposal that would allocate $20 billion to Latin American and Caribbean nations. He also called for an end to sanctions against Venezuela, the lifting of the US blockade on Cuba, and the granting of legal work status to at least 10 million Hispanic illegal immigrants.
In December, a record-breaking 300,000 illegal immigrants were processed by Customs and Border Protection, according to NBC.
In response to Lpez Obrador's demands, a senior Biden administration official told NBC that the Mexican President "has a very ambitious agenda. For some of these things, we would need Congress to act. We share the vision that we need to lift up the region."
U.S. negotiators are urging Mexico to ramp up enforcement along its southern border with Guatemala and to deport more illegal immigrants detained within Mexico. Both countries are scheduled to continue discussions in Washington later this month. Reportedly, both Mexican and American officials agree that Mexico holds considerable sway in these negotiations. The Lpez Obrador administration is also hopeful of Joe Biden's re-election in November, as per the outlet.
