According to the Spanish non-profit organization, Caminando Fronteras (Walking Borders), more than 6,600 migrants lost their lives while attempting to reach Spain by boat last year.
This figure is more than double the number of deaths reported in the previous year, which stood at 2,390. The organization has stated that 2023 was the deadliest year since it began recording these statistics in 2007. The majority of the recorded deaths, totaling 6,618, occurred along the Atlantic route from west Africa to Spain's Canary Islands, located just west of Morocco. Shockingly, this number includes 363 women and 384 children.
Caminando Fronteras compiles its own data by gathering information from migrant families and rescue statistics. These figures shed light on the alarming increase in migrant deaths, highlighting the urgent need for action to address this humanitarian crisis.
In response to these tragic events, Spain's interior ministry has reported that a record-breaking 55,618 migrants arrived in the country by boat last year. This number is nearly double the figure from the previous year, emphasizing the magnitude of the influx. The vast majority of these arrivals took place along the Atlantic route.
