The latest Gallup poll for 2023, released on Friday, reveals that President Joe Biden is set to conclude the year with the lowest job approval rating of any modern president entering a reelection year.
The poll, conducted between December 1 and 20, indicates a 39 percent job approval rating for the President, with Democratic support dwindling to 78 percent approval and independent approval standing at 34 percent.
In comparison, former presidents such as Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump had approval ratings of 54, 54, 51, 51, 58, 43, and 45 percent respectively at similar junctures in their presidencies.
Despite the bleak outlook, the December report marks a slight uptick for President Biden, who recorded the lowest approval numbers of his presidency in October and November at 37 percent.
The report highlights the economy as a significant factor, with 33 percent of Americans rating it as fair and a higher 45 percent categorizing it as poor. A mere 3 percent described the economy as excellent, while 19 percent deemed it good. Furthermore, a staggering 68 percent of Americans believe the economy is deteriorating, with only 28 percent asserting it is improving.
Earlier this month, a poll revealed that former President Trump is leading President Biden in every swing state. Trump is ahead by 40 to 33 percent in Arizona, 44 to 34 percent in Florida, 45 to 35 percent in Georgia, 39 to 38 percent in Michigan, 44 to 35 percent in North Carolina, and 44 to 37 percent in Pennsylvania.
The economy emerged as the paramount issue for voters in determining their choice for the 2024 election, with an average of 40 percent across the six states polled. Abortion was the second most important issue, with an average of 12 percent of respondents indicating so.
An NBC poll in November indicated a loss of support for President Biden among those aged 18-34, with foreign policy being a significant concern. A whopping 70 percent of respondents in this age group expressed disapproval of his handling of the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
