A statue of Satan, erected by The Satanic Temple in front of the Michigan Capitol, has sparked a wave of controversy and indignation, particularly among Christian communities who vehemently oppose the devil and his deeds.
This contentious act has led to seven Republican state legislators drafting a letter demanding the removal of the statue. However, a Democrat staffer, Samantha Skorka, has been seen praising the Satanic figure, even going as far as to label it as "sexy."
Skorka, a Michigan Democrat staffer, posted a photo on social media of her kissing the Satanic figure, which she referred to as a "sexy" idol. The post has since been removed, and Skorka has defended her actions, claiming her comments were made in jest.
"In the name of Satan, I claim the sexy satanic baphomet goat altar at OUR Michigan Capitol. Amen," Skorka was quoted as saying.
Further investigation has revealed that Skorka has a history of expressing anti-Christian sentiments, as evidenced by her social media posts.
In a post made on Thursday, Skorka wrote, "Don't forget to wish a Pagan a happy Yule and bright solstice." She punctuated her message with a goat emoji.
In response to the statue's erection, several Republican state legislators have written a letter to the members of the capitol commission, calling for the statue's removal.
The letter reads, "We, as members of the Michigan House of Representatives, respectfully request the removal of the statue depicting a satanic goat from the grounds of the Capitol. We believe that its presence not only contradicts the foundational principles of our nation but also promotes a public display of evil."
The legislators further argue that the statue undermines the moral and virtuous principles that form the bedrock of the nation's ethos, as emphasized by John Adams in his letter to the Massachusetts Militia.
The letter continues, "As elected representatives of our respective districts, we are entrusted with upholding the values and principles our nation was built upon. Therefore, we strongly urge the Capitol Commission to consider the implications of having such a statue on the Capitol grounds and to take decisive action in its removal."
The Satanic statue in Michigan follows a similar one erected inside the Iowa state Capitol last week by The Satanic Temple. This act led to a Christian military veteran from Missouri traveling to Iowa to decapitate the statue of Satan.
The Sentinel reports that Michael Cassidy, the veteran, toppled and beheaded the statue of Baphomet, which had been placed in the building by members of the Satanic Temple of Iowa with permission. Cassidy then discarded the statue's head into the trash.
Cassidy told The Sentinel that he destroyed the altar to "awaken Christians to the anti-Christian acts promoted by our government." He added, "The world may tell Christians to submissively accept the legitimization of Satan, but none of the founders would have considered government sanction of Satanic altars inside Capitol buildings as protected by the First Amendment."
Cassidy subsequently turned himself into the authorities present in the building. The Satanic Temple of Iowa has confirmed its intention to press charges against him. Cassidy has been charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief and may face additional charges.
