In a significant development, the Justice Department has leveled fresh criminal charges against Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden.

The charges were filed on December 8th in the Central District of California and include a nine-count indictment for tax evasion, failure to file or pay taxes, and submitting a false or fraudulent tax return.

The new indictment was issued by Special Counsel David Weiss after a proposed plea deal on tax charges collapsed earlier this year. CBS News' Catherine Herridge reported that Hunter Biden is scheduled to be arraigned on these nine charges in California on January 11th.

The investigation into Hunter Biden, led by David Weiss, is still ongoing. The case has been assigned to Judge Mark Scarsi of the United States District Court for the Central District of California, who was appointed by former President Donald Trump.

The indictment outlines a "four-year scheme" by Hunter Biden to evade over $1.4 million in tax obligations between 2016 and 2019 and to file false returns. According to the indictment, "Between 2016 and October 15, 2020, the Defendant individually received more than $7 million in total gross income... In addition, from January through October 15, 2020, the Defendant received approximately $1.2 million in financial support to fund his extravagant lifestyle."

The indictment also sheds light on Hunter Biden's extravagant lifestyle, drug use, and addiction to prostitutes. It states, "Between 2016 and October 15, 2020, the Defendant spent this money on drugs, escorts and girlfriends, luxury hotels and rental properties, exotic cars, clothing, and other items of a personal nature, in short, everything but his taxes."

The indictment further reveals that Hunter Biden spent $683,121 on 'various women.' If convicted, he could face up to 17 years in prison.

Former federal prosecutor Will Scharf commented on the gravity of the situation for Hunter Biden, stating, "With the sweetheart deal previously offered to him now off the table, Hunter is in an awful lot of trouble."
