The White House Christmas decorations, unveiled by Dr. Jill Biden last month, have sparked controversy and debate.
The decorations, described by some as lacking in taste and elegance, utilized nearly 15,000 feet of ribbon, over 350 candles, and more than 22,000 bells, according to a statement from the White House. CBS News further reported that the festive display included over 142,425 twinkling lights adorning trees, garlands, wreaths, and other displays.
The exterior of the White House was not left out of the festive makeover, with 72 wreaths featuring red ribbons gracing the north and south exteriors, as reported by CBS News.
Dr. Jill Biden, in her statement, explained the inspiration behind this year's theme. "Our theme is inspired by how children experience this festive season: completely present in the beauty and bounty around them, their senses alight, with hearts open to the 'Magic, Wonder, and Joy' of the season," she said.
The First Lady further detailed some of the standout features of the decorations. "We have Santas magical sleigh suspended in the air in the Grand Foyer, a working train running around the Official White House Christmas Tree, and a Gingerbread White House that celebrates the 200th Anniversary of a childhood favorite, Twas the Night Before Christmas!" she said.
In a welcome letter, President Joe Biden and the First Lady encouraged Americans to embrace the spirit of the season. "In this season of reflection and goodwill, we hope you will embrace your inner child and delight in simply being present with those you love," they wrote.
However, the First Lady's omission of Jesus Christ in her holiday message has drawn criticism.
In addition to the decorations, a Christmas advertisement was released on Wednesday, filmed within the White House. The First Lady described it as "a bit of magic, wonder, and joy brought to you by the talented tappers of Dorrance Dance, performing their playful interpretation of The Nutcracker Suite."
Despite the intended enchantment, the advertisement, which was funded by taxpayers, was met with mixed reactions on social media. One user compared the current decorations unfavorably to those of former First Lady Melania Trump, stating, "How utterly tacky, tasteless and ANTI Christmas. Melanias was tasteful, seasonal, appealed to everyone and was absolutely breathtaking and gorgeous."
