Ohio Republican Senator J.D. Vance and Oklahoma Republican Representative Kevin Hern are set to introduce a new piece of legislation on Thursday.
The bill, titled the Withholding Illegal Revenue Entering Drug Markets (WIRED) Act, aims to tackle illegal activity, such as drug and human smuggling, by imposing a 10 percent fee on remittances leaving the United States. The Daily Caller was the first to obtain a copy of the bill.
The funds raised through these remittance fees will be directed towards U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, with the goal of enhancing border security. Senator Vance emphasized the importance of taking action against illegal immigration and reducing the financial power of drug cartels. He stated, "We cannot stand idly by as illegal immigrants and drug cartels profit from breaking our nation's laws."
Representative Hern echoed these sentiments, expressing concern over the Democrats' handling of the border crisis. He highlighted the cartels' control over the southern border, their involvement in child trafficking, and the devastating impact of fentanyl on American lives. Hern emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "Millions of Americans are in danger. We need every tool in our arsenal to combat the cartels and regain control of our border."
The bill has garnered support from organizations such as the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) and NumbersUSA. These groups recognize the importance of implementing measures to target illicit activities that funnel money from the United States to the cartels. They view the remittance fee as a financial weapon that can contribute to securing the border and deterring illegal activity.
As Vance and Hern prepare to introduce the WIRED Act, they hope to address the ongoing border crisis and disrupt the operations of drug cartels. By targeting the financial resources of these criminal organizations, they aim to make significant strides in securing the border and protecting American citizens.
