In a recent development, New York Congressman Dan Goldman, a Democrat and heir to the Levi Strauss & Co fortune, is facing a lawsuit over unpaid rent.
The landlords of his luxury Tribeca apartment have filed a suit, claiming the congressman owes them $360,000 for four months of unpaid rent, as per court documents.
Goldman, 47, and his wife Corinne Goldman, are named in the summons filed in Manhattan Supreme Court on Monday by landlords Jason and Natasha Gilbert. The couple is alleged to owe $180,000 in rent. Goldman, whose personal net worth is estimated to be over $253 million, reportedly had a lease on the 3,818-square-foot apartment at 60 Collister Street until July 31, 2024. However, the landlords claim that he has not paid the monthly rent of $45,000 since August.
Crains New York reports that the landlords are seeking $360,000 from Mr. Goldman and his wife to cover the remaining months of the broken lease. The couple has 20 days to respond to the summons, failing which they could face a default judgment.
The disputed five-bedroom apartment, which boasts a corner penthouse and 1,500-square-feet of outdoor space, is currently listed for sale at $14 million, as per a StreetEasy listing.
A spokesperson for Congressman Goldman has refuted the allegations, labeling them as baseless and asserting that the congressman has always been punctual and complete in his rent payments.
Goldman, the great-grandson of former Levi Strauss & Co president Walter Haas, assumed office as the representative for New Yorks new 10th Congressional District in January. He is known for his role as the lead attorney in former President Donald Trumps first impeachment.
Earlier this year, he led the initiative to oust Congressman George Santos by filing an ethics complaint against him following Santos' admission of lying to Congress about his career, education, and family history. Goldman, who was brought up in a Jewish family, has been a vocal supporter of Israel during its conflict with Hamas.
