A federal judge has ordered the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to hand over the laptop of Seth Rich, the 27-year-old Democratic National Committee staffer who was fatally shot on July 10, 2016, while returning to his Washington, DC home.
Judge Amos Mazzant of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas ruled in favor of Brian Huddleston, who had filed a lawsuit against the FBI for failing to provide the laptop after submitting a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.
In his decision, Judge Mazzant stated, "It is further ORDERED that the Government and Huddleston shall recommend to the court a timeline for the disclosure of information on Seth Rich's personal laptop, Seth Rich's work laptop, the DVD, and the tape drive within 14 days following the issuance of this Memorandum Opinion and Order."
According to Just The News, Brian Huddleston, a resident of Texas, had filed FOIA requests in 2017 and 2020 with the FBI regarding its investigation into Seth Rich's murder. In a 2022 ruling, Judge Mazzant found that the FBI had "improperly withheld" information related to Seth Rich's laptop. While the police have maintained that Rich was killed during a failed robbery attempt, some have suggested a potential connection between his death and the Democratic Party. NPR reports that Rich's parents settled a lawsuit with Fox News in 2020 over the network's involvement in promoting these claims.
To date, no suspect has been arrested in connection with Seth Rich's murder, and the case remains open.
