In a recent press briefing, Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy questioned White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre about the widespread disapproval of the current economy among Americans.
This comes in the wake of numerous polls indicating a significant dissatisfaction with President Joe Biden's economic management, despite the administration's continuous promotion of their economic initiatives.
A recent Wall Street Journal/NORC poll revealed that 65% of Americans perceive the economy as "not so good or poor," marking a significant decline in their confidence in the American dream compared to the previous year.
During the briefing, Doocy asked, "Lowering prices, you said earlier that the actions the president has taken have worked. So, is it your sense that when people are home for Thanksgiving, catching up with their family members, they are saying to each other, Can you believe how much more affordable things have gotten?
Jean-Pierre responded, We take what families, the dishes that they make at their kitchen table, whether its during Thanksgiving or whether it is every month as they are trying to make hard decisions about how they move forward and take care of their family. We take that very seriously. Its not a joke to us. Its important to us. The president talks about it in a very personal way when he talks about what families have to go through, working families, middle-class families, and thats why hes taking actions like he has.
She further emphasized that the data indicates an improving economy, with household wealth at a record high and lower-income households experiencing the most significant gains since the pandemic.
However, Doocy countered, But why do you think it is that when you say the economy is improving and President Biden says the economy is improving, that a majority of Americans outside of this building are not buying it?
Jean-Pierre argued that the Biden administration had rescued the economy from the alleged "tail-spin" under former President Donald Trump's leadership by passing the American Rescue Plan and facilitating business reopenings. She acknowledged that it would take time for Americans to personally experience the economy's improvements.
Doocy challenged Jean-Pierre's criticism of Trump, noting that inflation has increased by over 17% since Biden took office. Jean-Pierre countered that inflation has actually decreased.
Jean-Pierre stated, So we understand that people are still not feeling it. We get that. But that doesnt mean that were not going to continue to talk about it. It doesnt mean that the president at 2 oclock is not going to talk about how hes lowering costs, and lets not forget what Republicans are doing on the other side of Pennsylvania Avenue.
She accused Republicans of attempting to increase healthcare costs and eliminate Medicare and Social Security. These allegations were met with boos from Republicans during Biden's State of the Union address in February. Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy refuted Biden's claims, asserting that any cut to Social Security or Medicare is off the table.
