Seattle Public Schools has confirmed that students at their schools sent letters adorned with rainbows and pro-LGBT slogans to the parental rights group Moms for Liberty.
The school district acknowledged this activity, stating that the materials were sent independently last spring. The letters were accompanied by a note from public school teacher Ann Christianson, urging the recipients to read the enclosed cards from concerned middle school students in Seattle, Washington.
Seattle Public Schools emphasized their commitment to creating inclusive and welcoming environments for all students, staff, and families. They stated that they firmly support the rights of individuals to express their authentic selves and take pride in their unwavering support for LGBTQIA+ students, staff, and families, as reflected in their policies and everyday practices.
The letters sent by the students expressed strong sentiments in support of the LGBTQ community. One letter read, "Gay is slay, love is love and ur wrong! Grow up! I'm more mature than you!" Another letter addressed Moms for Liberty directly, urging them to stop bullying and excluding LGBTQ youth and families from Seattle Public Schools. In addition to this letter-writing activity, it has been reported that two Seattle Public Schools offered "gender affirming care" to students in July through the Country Doctor Community Health Centers. These centers provide referrals for cross-sex hormones and surgeries.
Leaked documents from 2020 indicate that Seattle Public Schools instructed teachers to "bankrupt their privilege" during training sessions. The training materials alleged that the education industry was responsible for the "spirit murder" of black children and that the United States was built on "stolen" Native American land.Seattle Public Schools' confirmation of the students' letter-writing activity and their commitment to supporting LGBTQIA+ students, staff, and families reflect the district's dedication to fostering inclusive and identity-safe environments. However, these actions have also sparked debate and raised questions about the school district's approach to education and the inclusion of diverse perspectives.
