In a shocking revelation, a former auto dealership executive and two accomplices were found guilty by a federal jury of a murder-for-hire plot that led to the tragic demise of two Nashville citizens.
The U.S. Attorneys Office for the Middle District of Tennessee made this announcement on Monday.
Erik Maund, 48, and Bryon Brockway, 48, both hailing from Austin, Texas, along with Adam Carey, 32, from Richlands, North Carolina, were convicted of the heinous scheme after a grueling two-and-a-half-week jury trial, as reported by the U.S. Attorneys Office.
The jury also found Brockway and Carey guilty of conspiracy to commit kidnapping and kidnapping resulting in death. The release from the U.S. Attorneys Office also mentioned that Gilad Peled, 49, another Austin resident, had previously pleaded guilty to the same charges and agreed to testify in the trial.
The U.S. Attorneys Office revealed that Maund, an executive in his family's auto dealership, was involved in an extramarital affair with Holly Williams, 33, from Nashville. In March 2020, William Lanway, 36, also from Nashville, attempted to blackmail Maund over the affair.
In response, Maund hired Peled to deal with the extortion. Peled subsequently enlisted Brockway and Carey to investigate Lanway and Williams in Nashville. As Lanway's extortion attempts persisted, Maund agreed to pay Brockway and Carey $100,000 each to murder Lanway and Williams.
The U.S. Attorneys Office reported that on March 12, 2020, Brockway and Carey killed the victims at a construction site following their abduction. Over the following year, Peled received $900,000 from Maund to distribute to Brockway and Carey for the murders.
Douglas DePodesta, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Memphis Field Office, stated, Those who devalue life need to know that when you break the law, you will be brought to justice. We will continue to combine our resources and share our expertise to target those who hope to commit similar heinous acts.
The U.S. Attorneys Office reported that Maund, Brockway, and Carey are now facing mandatory life sentences. Peled's cooperation will be taken into account when he is sentenced in 2024.
