The White House is reportedly employing a dual-pronged approach in its correspondence with American citizens, in an attempt to address the internal party divisions over the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
According to NBC News, the administration is dispatching two distinct letters in response to citizen messages to President Joe Biden, each tailored to the recipient's stance on the conflict, either pro-Israel or pro-Gaza.
In the version dispatched to pro-Palestinian citizens, President Biden underscores the efforts his administration has made to secure aid for Palestinian civilians and his insistence on the observance of international humanitarian law. "We must always condemn terrorism when we see it. There is no justification for it no excuse," Biden states in the letter. He further clarifies, "But Hamas does not represent the Palestinian people. It does not stand for the dignity of Palestinians. We mourn the many innocent Palestinians who have been killed."
Conversely, in the letter addressed to staunch Israel supporters, the President reaffirms his backing for Israel's right to self-defense against Hamas and the terrorist attacks on October 7, which he labels as "pure evil." "The United States stands with Israel," Biden asserts. "We will continue to ensure that Israel has what it needs to defend itself against terrorism in accordance with international humanitarian law. I will bring all resources to bear to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas including our fellow Americans."
The President's policy on the Israel-Hamas conflict has elicited mixed reactions among Democrats, as indicated by a poll conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research earlier this month. The poll revealed that Democrats are nearly split down the middle in their approval of Biden's approach to the conflict.
Biden has also faced criticism from the progressive wing of his party, with some accusing him of endorsing Israel's "ethnic cleansing," while others are calling for an immediate ceasefire. The Washington Examiner has reached out to the White House for further comment.
