The family of a 22-year-old man, who tragically died on November 9, is seeking answers following allegations that he was brutally assaulted in an Alabama prison.
The prison warden had initially reported the cause of death as an overdose, a claim the family vehemently disputes. They argue that evidence points to a violent beating, forced drugging, and potential sexual assault by another inmate.
Daniel Williams, who was nearing the end of a 12-month sentence for theft at Staton Prison in Elmore County, was discovered unresponsive on October 22. He was subsequently transported to a hospital and placed on life support. However, with minimal brain activity, the difficult decision to terminate life support was ultimately made.
As reported by WVTM, the family was informed by a warden at Staton Prison that Williams was hospitalized due to an overdose. However, upon visiting him at the hospital, nurses disclosed to the family that he had been "assaulted and beaten really badly." His fiance, Amber, recounted the horrifying sight of "bruises all down his arm, like down to his fingers," and "cuts up and down and bruises on his legs."
Amber expressed her sorrow that their daughter would never have memories of her father. Williams' father, Terry, shared his heated conversation with the warden, stating, "I called the warden, and I cussed him. I said, dude, you know this is not an overdose case? You know exactly what happened. How is this crap going to happen like this?"
Terry Williams also revealed that the Alabama Department of Corrections' Law Enforcement Services Division is currently investigating the incident, with a potential inmate-on-inmate assault being considered.
While an autopsy is scheduled, the family is keen on securing an independent examination, provided they can raise the necessary funds. To aid in this endeavor, a GoFundMe campaign was initiated by Elite Drain and Septic, the company where Williams' father is employed. The campaign has successfully raised over $14,000, which will be used to cover funeral costs and other related expenses.
