Hillary Clinton, the former Secretary of State and Democratic presidential candidate, has once again drawn a parallel between Donald Trump and Adolf Hitler.
During her appearance on ABC's The View on Wednesday, Clinton expressed her concerns about the dangers of authoritarianism, seemingly equating Trump and Hitler.
Clinton started her discourse by highlighting the risks posed by legitimately elected leaders who then attempt to dismantle democratic institutions. "People would get legitimately elected, and then they would try to do away with elections, do away with opposition, and do away with the free press," she stated. She then pointed out that Hitler was also elected, implying that democratic processes can sometimes lead to authoritarian rule.
She went on to suggest that Trump has been transparent about his intentions. "Trump is telling us what he intends to do," she said. "Take him at his word. The man means to throw people in jail who disagree with him, shut down legitimate press outlets, do what he can to literally undermine the rule of law and this country's values."
Earlier in the conversation, Clinton warned of dire consequences if Trump were to secure victory in the 2024 elections. "I don't say that lightly," she emphasized. "I hated losing, and I especially hated losing to him because I had seen so many warning signals during the campaign."
Clinton also shared her post-election experience in 2016, stating that she tried to give Trump a chance. However, she claimed that his actions from the inauguration onwards were concerning. "From his inauguration on it was nothing but accusing of things, making up facts ... everything that I worried about," she said.
She further speculated that Trump could be more dangerous now, as he might feel less restrained. "I think he'd be even worse now," she suggested, "because he was somewhat restrained in the first term ... so now he is going to ... find people who have no principles, no conscience."
This is not the first instance where Clinton has drawn a comparison between Trump and a dictator. In 2022, she likened Trump's rallies to those led by the Nazi leader.
