In a tragic incident near Jerusalem on Monday, an American-Israeli police officer was fatally stabbed, and another Israeli officer was injured in an alleged terrorist attack, as reported by Israeli authorities.

The victims, both security personnel, were on duty near a police station just outside the Old City's walls when they were assaulted by a 16-year-old suspect, according to the police. The Jerusalem Post reported that the responding officers shot and killed the young suspect at the scene.

The deceased officer was identified as 20-year-old Sgt. Rose Ida Lubin. She was critically injured during the attack and was rushed to Hadassah-University Medical Center in Jerusalem by Magen David Adom paramedics. Despite the emergency care, Lubin succumbed to her injuries.

Born in the United States, Lubin reportedly resided in Atlanta before immigrating to Israel in August 2021. She joined the Israeli police force in March 2022, as stated by the Jewish News Syndicate. At the time of her death, Lubin was living in Kibbutz Saad, near the Gaza border.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp confirmed Lubin's death on a social media platform. "Marty, the girls and I are heartbroken by the tragic news of Rose Lubin's death," he wrote. "Her courage and commitment to fighting evil is an inspiration to us all, and we will continue to keep her family and loved ones in our thoughts and prayers during their difficult time."

Kemp further stated, "While the horrors of war may seem far away, moments like these remind us why it is paramount to stand alongside our friends in Israel as they fight against terror in their land."

Another suspect was apprehended at the scene, believed to have assisted the attacker, as reported by both outlets.

The incident comes amidst escalating Israeli-Palestinian tensions in the region and beyond, as the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza surpassed one month on Tuesday.

The war, initiated by a surprise terrorist attack on Israeli border communities by Hamas-led forces on October 7, has resulted in thousands of casualties on both sides, marking it as the deadliest in Israels history.

The Gaza Health Ministry reports that the Israeli militarys continued bombardment of the Gaza Strip has resulted in over 10,000 Palestinian deaths in Gaza. More than 1,400 people in Israel were killed in the attack, and over 240 people are believed to have been taken as hostages back into Gaza. The death toll is expected to rise as Hamas and Israeli officials have yet to agree on a cease-fire.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel would only agree to a cease-fire and halt its pursuit of Hamas operatives if the hostages, which include individuals from various nationalities, are released. At least 10 Americans are believed to be among the hostages. Conversely, Hamas has stated that they will only release the hostages if Israel ceases its aerial assault on Gaza.
