The Biden administration is advancing its initiative to issue identification cards to undocumented immigrants through the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The ICE Secure Docket Card program was unveiled in 2022, and recent revelations have shed light on the design of these cards.
Resembling driver's licenses or non-driver IDs, these cards are not intended to serve as an official form of federal identification. Instead, they are a contemporary replacement for the paper documents provided to those who cross into the United States. Several cities governed by Democrats have also extended ID cards to undocumented immigrants, with some even attempting to grant voting rights to this group.
Fox News has obtained images of the cards, which will prominently feature ICE logos and contain pertinent information about the cardholder. A QR code in the top right corner will allow officials to access a case file when scanned. The cards will also carry biographic data and be equipped with advanced security features.
An ICE spokesperson explained to Fox News, "The ICE secure docket card concept is a pilot program that would modernize documentation provided to some noncitizens. While the specifics of the program are under development, it is important to note the secure card will not be an official form of federal identification. The secure card will indicate it is for use by DHS agencies and would be provided only after national security background checks have been performed."
ICE asserts that transitioning to a secure card will save the agency millions, liberate resources, and expedite access to information for DHS officials, thereby reducing the agency's FOIA backlog. The spokesperson further noted that "Paper documents pose a security risk, are easily lost, and degrade rapidly in real-world use, creating inefficiencies for the government and noncitizens."
However, the proposal to issue ID cards to those who entered the country unlawfully has been met with opposition. When the plan was first introduced last year, members of the House Oversight Committee criticized it as "yet another Biden Administration move encouraging illegal immigration by rewarding illegal immigrants for breaking our laws."
