In a twist of political irony, Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman stands as the lone Democrat in the Senate to demand the resignation of New Jersey's Senator Bob Menendez.
Fetterman's call comes in the aftermath of explosive bribery allegations against Menendez, which have sent shockwaves through the Democratic ranks. However, their Democratic colleagues have adopted a more cautious stance, refraining from joining Fetterman's call for Menendez's resignation.
During Sunday news programs, three Democratic senators expressed severe criticism of Menendez, who was recently indicted on extensive corruption charges. Despite their criticism, they stopped short of demanding his resignation from the Senate, where Democrats hold a narrow majority.
Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut and a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, which Menendez chaired until Friday, described the allegations against Menendez as "devastating."
As of this writing, Fetterman remains the sole sitting senator to demand Menendez's resignation. Fetterman, who made his call for Menendez's resignation on Saturday, stated, "Hes entitled to the presumption of innocence under our system, but he is not entitled to continue to wield influence over national policy, especially given the serious and specific nature of the allegations."
Menendez, however, has vehemently denied any wrongdoing. In a statement released on Friday night, he declared, "I'm not going anywhere."
While Menendez is indeed innocent until proven guilty, the discovery of nearly half a million dollars in cash, gold bars, and records of suspicious mortgage payments by third parties during a federal search warrant execution raises serious questions.
Despite the mounting evidence, Menendez seems determined to weather the storm. However, his legal protections do not shield him from the growing calls for his resignation. It seems highly unlikely that Fetterman will remain the only Democrat to demand Menendez's resignation, especially considering the potential damage to Menendez's political career.
In addition to Fetterman, New Jersey's Governor Phil Murphy and other New Jersey Democrats have called for Menendez's resignation. Representative Andy Kim, a Democrat from New Jersey, has also demanded Menendez's resignation and announced his intention to challenge Menendez for his seat. These calls are expected to intensify as the case progresses.
However, questions surround Fetterman's own fitness to serve in the Senate. His casual attire during Senate proceedings and his peculiar response to the House impeachment inquiry have raised eyebrows. Moreover, Fetterman's physical and mental health issues have led some to question his suitability for his Senate seat.
