The immigration crisis at the southern border is running a high cost for New York City.
The New York Post reported that the New York City Office of Management and Budget memo showed that the city might spend as much as $4.2 billion next year on the migrant and asylum-seeker crisis. This cost analysis estimates the total costs between June 30, 2023, and 2024 which is the fiscal year for NYC.
An internal city memo shows that New York Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochuls plan could reimburse the city up to $1 billion for managing migrants and asylum seekers, but that would only cover approximately 29% of the estimated costs at this rate.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams recently made a trip to El Paso and stated that he estimates the cost for New York City for this Crisis would be between $1.5 and $2 billion.
The memo that has been floating around says that Hochuls plan poses a significant issue for the city. The message states the following:
Financially, the Governors Executive Budget contains few city priorities and poses challenges to the city if enacted as written.
The memo blamed the Migrant Crisis for already straining the citys financial position, stating:
If the proposed actions by the Governor [are not] reversed and more aid is not secured to deal with the Migrant Crisis, the city will [be] forced to take [a] number of actions to maintain a balanced budget in FY23 and FY24. This action would make it difficult to provide current [levels of] service to New Yorkers.
The memo is dated February 6 and comes after Mayor Adams spent a night in a mega-migrant shelter in the city following a protest by migrants. The migrants didnt want to leave the Watson Hotel, where the city housed them, before they put them into a mega-migrant facility, according to Fox News.
After the move from the hotel to the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, approximately 50 migrants protested outside the hotel for several days, according to Fox News. Many of the migrants went to the facility and said that it did not have sufficient heat and water. The protests led to Mayor Adams deciding to spend a night at the center.
Adams reported to Fox 5:
I slept like a baby. It was warm. I had my nice little blanket. Thats my favorite blanket. Im like Linus, you know, on Charlie Brown.
and
I have my favorite blanket that I just [hug] up on, and I had pleasant dreams, got up the next day, had breakfast, and sat down and spoke with asylum seekers.
