American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis recently slammed what New York City has become and wondered aloud how anyone continues to live there.
He said that the city is unrecognizable and that he cant imagine how people live in the Big Apple anymore. He gave an exclusive interview with Vanity Fair after he visited New York City for the first time in a decade.
Ellis was discussing his latest book, The Shards, and he said he regrets what the city has become. He doesnt understand how anyone could be satisfied with living there, given all that has happened in New York City in recent years. He sees it as an outright disaster at this point and feels that many others must genuinely see it the same way he does.
Speaking with Vanity, he said:
I arrived Wednesday night during this horrible storm, and then the usual problems of getting your luggage, an hour waiting at Delta carousel, and then the ride into New York.
and
I thought, How does anyone live here? How in the f--- does anyone live here?
He then shared a story about his recent visit to New York City and how much it has changed since he was there before:
I had not been to New York in at least 10 years. I had to get some stuff out of storage and wanted to meet the new tenant because Ive been renting it out for years and years and years. And, Around Fourth Avenue, 13th Street, I looked up from my phone and suddenly panicked. I told the driver, Youre in the wrong area. Continuing, Were going to 13th Street between Third and Fourth. He said, This is it. I couldnt believe the change.
Vanity Fair columnist Nate Freeman stated that Ellis had not lived in New York City since 2004 and preferred to live in Los Angeles. However, he still has fond memories of New York City and is upset that so much of the city has changed dramatically in his lifetime.
Ellis stated: I talk to a lot of people who just simply agreeto be youngish and living in New York during that period, and to be involved in the magazine world, the glorious magazine world.
Overall, he has been shocked by how far the city has fallen since he lived there.
